Video From the Frontlines—The Fight for Indigenous Land

By Brihannala Morgan

The fight for the land rights of the Indigenous Batak people in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is growing stronger every day. But there is still work to be done.

That is why Indigenous frontline activists, as well as local, national, and international NGOs, are working together to make sure community land rights are respected, and that frontline activists aren’t arrested or intimidated for speaking out.

In under two minutes, this video tells the emotional story of community struggles for  land rights—the partial victories and continued protests against pulp and paper company Toba Pulp Lestari (TPL).

Watch this powerful new video of Indigenous frontline activists in action. Through our Beyond Paper Promises campaign we can work together to amplify their struggle and ensure that TPL can’t sweep this under the rug.

This video is a partnership between the Alliance of Indigenous Peoples of Indonesia (AMAN), local Indigenous rights organization KSPPM, RAN, and Handcrafted Films.

Together, this international movement can truly make sure that the Batak people of North Sumatra can get legal rights to their land and protect their lives and livelihoods for generations to come.
