Allianz: Human Rights Complaint Reveals Responsibility for LNG Risks

Munich | May 5, 2026 — Today, Rainforest Action Network (RAN), together with local organizations from the U.S. state of Louisiana and its German-based partner NGO Urgewald, officially filed a human rights complaint with the Allianz Group, one of the leading insurance companies in the world. Just ahead of this year’s Allianz Annual General Meeting on Thursday in Munich, the complaint draws attention to the company’s ongoing LNG insurance business and the many risks this sector poses, including to the insurer’s reputation.

This complaint sheds light on its business ties to the controversial company Venture Global, which is currently building the CP2 LNG terminal in Louisiana. According to recent research by RAN, Allianz subsidiary AGCS Marine holds a $1 million insurance policy for Callan Marine, a construction company contracted for the CP2 terminal, which expires on October 1 of this year and is up for renewal.

Callan Marine operates dredgers on site, which were also in use when, in August 2025, dredged silt caused widespread contamination of a local lake in connection with the construction work. This sharply reduced shrimp, crab, and oyster catches and harmed local fishing communities.1 This sharply reduced shrimp, crab, and oyster catches and harmed local fishing communities.

Experts from RAN and Urgewald repeatedly discussed this issue with Allianz, which was also involved in insuring the older Calcasieu Pass (CP1) LNG terminal, located in close proximity to CP2. The present insurance policy shows that the insurer is nevertheless continuing to conduct business in favor of Venture Global.

Urgewald also points out the persistent flaws in Allianz’s energy policy: Despite all the positive aspects of the policy regarding oil and gas extraction, Allianz remains a major global insurer, particularly for the harmful expansion of gas infrastructure, such as LNG terminals.

Quotes

Ethan Nuss, Senior Campaigner at RAN, says: “What good is Allianz’s human rights commitments if it actively insures human rights abuses? The health and livelihoods of local fishing families have been decimated by LNG pollution. They deserve a remedy. Allianz must terminate its insurance coverage for Venture Global’s LNG terminals.”

Captain Ray Mallet, a local shrimper and part of the FACTS council at the Habitat Recovery project, says: “This accident is part of a pattern of environmental violations which are ending the livelihoods for those of us who live here. CP2 is shaping up to be a sacrifice zone: an industry project that sacrifices communities, health, climate, local economies and justice for short-term profit. But to speak plainly, Venture Global isn’t the only company making money off our suffering; they aren’t the only ones to blame. No financial institution should invest in CP2. No insurance company should underwrite CP2. Our government must revoke or refuse to finalize any permits tied to this project. We need help. We are fighting to survive while watching the oyster beds get covered in silt, the crabs and shrimp choke and fisherfolk and our families get nosebleeds nightly from the pollution when working in the waters our parents and grandparents worked for decades. We want to thrive! Let the marshes stay wild, give us back our safety and economy and let our communities breathe.”

Regine Richter, Finance Campaigner at Urgewald, says: “The situation in Louisiana demonstrates the manifold dangers to which the LNG sector exposes people and the environment. A glance at the latest climate data is enough to understand that not a single new LNG terminal should be allowed to go into operation. As a globally influential industrial insurer, Allianz plays a key role here. It must live up to its responsibility and consistently end its business with gas infrastructure.”
