RAN is looking for a Japan-based Senior Campaigner to support RAN’s finance sector campaigning activities in and related to Japan; we anticipate this position beginning work in January 2024. The position will primarily support RAN’s Forests and Finance Team, but also work in close coordination with RAN’s Japan-based staff as well as our Climate and Energy Program. In this position you will develop and support comprehensive corporate campaigns to push the Japanese financial sector to halt its support to industries driving deforestation, climate change and human rights abuses. That includes designing and coordinating campaign strategies, collaborating with a range of national and international partners, conducting policy analysis, and engaging directly with corporate decision makers. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, curious, and organized thinker who enjoys interacting with a range of people whether inside RAN, in corporate meeting rooms or at street demonstrations, with a deep commitment to human rights, justice and the environment.
- Lead development of RAN’s financial sector campaign strategy in and related to Japan;
- Co-design, and oversee implementation of outside pressure campaign tactics including digital, communications and organizing strategies, including direct actions;
- Develop and maintain strategic partnerships nationally and internationally, including with grassroots and frontline partners, following RAN’s Partnership Guidelines;
- Undertake analysis into the policies and practices of financial institutions relating to forestry, agriculture and energy sectors;
- Stay abreast of relevant regional and international financial sector frameworks and initiatives;
- Build and maintain relationships and engagement with a range of relevant stakeholders, including decision makers in the financial sector;
- Direct and support research to be used for crafting campaign strategy or for specific campaign goals and activities;
- Write and review compelling communications materials for reporters, RAN supporters, funders, and partners.
- Represent RAN as a spokesperson with media and at public events;
- Supervise any contractors hired to complete campaign tasks
- Contribute to building inclusive and collaborative team culture, in conjunction with RAN staff based in Japan and internationally.
- Minimum 5 years experience in environmental or social justice-related campaigning, or equivalent transferable experience is required;
- Strong interest and awareness about tropical deforestation and/or climate and energy issues, with working knowledge or strong interest and willingness to learn about the role of the financial sector in these industries;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Japanese and English;
- Strong analytical, decision-making, strategic facilitation and prioritization skills
- Excellent project management and organizational skills;
- Ability to handle simultaneous deadlines and work independently;
- Commitment to climate justice, human and Indigenous rights;
- Commitment to racial justice and equity, and an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations;
- Experience with or interest and eagerness to learn about non-violent direct action;
- A proven track record of working effectively in teams;
- Previous experience managing/supervising others is preferred.
This is a full-time position with an anticipated starting salary range equivalent to $65,000 – $75,000 USD (payable in USD or JPY), commensurate with experience and location. Due to the nature of this position’s engagement with financial institutions in Japan, there is a strong preference for candidates who are based in the Greater Tokyo region. RAN has staff in time zones across the world, and staff are expected to work flexibly in order to connect with colleagues.
Benefits include RAN-paid health, dental and vision insurance for the staff person and their partner/family, four weeks PTO (increases to five weeks after two years) as well as a paid winter break, and a retirement plan with a 3% employer match. Additionally, after every five years of service, staff are eligible for a 12-week fully-paid sabbatical.
