RAN West Bengal observed “World Energy Day” in the streets of Kolkata on December 18th, 2008. Prominent speakers attended the event and expressed their grave concern at the rate of energy consumption in India. Sixty-two percent of power in India is generated from coal.

“The Earth unfortunately is not a never ending treasure trove of resources,’ said RAN West Bengal coordinator Sudipta Sarkhel. “The speakers stressed on the need for energy saving and urged the people to help reduce pollution by simply changing the way the light their homes and offices. They reminded the people that energy saving is today the top in a list of social responsibilities of every individual.”

“We also observed one minute silence and burnt candle light
in memory of the victims and those who laid down their lives in
fighting the Mumbai terrorist attack on 26th November, 2008,” Sudipta told us.
