November, 2015: President Obama rejects Keystone XL pipeline

In November of 2015, President Obama announced his long-awaited decision on Keystone XL, rejecting TransCanada’s application for a permit to build the northern leg of the pipeline.

The president’s decision was the result of years of grassroots organizing in every corner of the country, against the odds and against elite opinion. History will look back on this decision as a watershed moment for the climate movement. It marks the beginning of a new paradigm — as the point when we, as a society, began to leave the pipelines unbuilt and keep fossil fuels in the ground.
