By any measure, 2014 was a turning point in the international movement to reform the notoriously destructive palm oil industry. Many of the sector’s biggest players announced groundbreaking, globally responsible palm oil commitments and pledged to eliminate forest and peatland destruction, human rights abuses, forced and child labor and climate pollution from their palm oil supply chains. These commitments set an achievable bar above the compromised standards and misleading sustainability claims made by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
The Snack Food 20 Front Runners are: Mars, Smuckers, General Mills, The Kellogg Company, Nestlé, Dunkin’ Brands, ConAgra, The Hershey Company, Krispy Kreme and Mondelēz.
Continued pressure and vigilance is required to ensure these newly stated commitments are successfully implemented and translated into real change on the ground.
Send your message now: Tell the Front Runners that more action is needed, and you won't have deforestation, extinction, or slavery in your home.
Your company has emerged as a front runner in the global race to cut Conflict Palm Oil, but more action is needed. Conflict Palm Oil is enslaving children, killing endangered orangutans, and destroying the rainforest. I will not stand for it in my home. Despite your company’s commitments, more action is needed to regain my trust: your company must eliminate Conflict Palm Oil contamination from all of its products. Your company has taken the first step by adopting a responsible palm oil commitment that sets the bar above the inadequate standards of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Adopting clear commitments and deadlines is a crucial first step. Even strong commitments are meaningless, however, if they aren’t tied to clear effective action. In order to become a true leader, your company needs to stop sourcing palm oil from suppliers trafficking Conflict Palm Oil and publish assertive time-bound implementation plans that will drive rapid action on the ground to protect forests, the communities that depend on them, and palm oil workers. I have made a stand to protect the last wild orangutans. I will not stand by brands that use Conflict Palm Oil.
