Our Climate and Energy Program campaigns to keep fossil fuels in the ground and persuade corporate targets, including the world’s largest banks and insurance companies, to develop and implement comprehensive climate, environmental, and human rights policies to guide their lending and underwriting. The Research Manager is responsible for overseeing and executing research for the C&E Program, engaging with financial institutions, and coordinating special projects as needed. This position will inform and support the team’s work to call out corporate greenwashing and inadequate government response while ensuring our research is responsive to our frontline and grassroots partners. The Research Manager will report to the Climate and Energy Program Director. 



  • In consultation with the Climate and Energy Program Director and team, lead research for the program ensuring that all campaigns are strategically aligned and that foundational research is of exceptional quality 
  • Develop and undertake campaign research strategy and priorities for the program 
  • Inform organization-wide research on a range of topics, including climate, energy, finance (insurance and banking sectors), campaigning, etc. 
  • Project manage the Climate and Energy Program’s research including consultation, writing, editing, coordinating design and production, managing coalition work and partner relationships 
  • Oversee publication of the Climate and Energy Program’s flagship annual publication, Banking on Climate Chaos 
  • Stay abreast of developments in the energy and finance sectors and analyze financial institution policies 
  • Identify and track key financial intervention moments and evaluate how and if RAN can influence these activities 
  • Commission research and data analysis, and oversee the work of external contractors 
  • Provide and/or supervise financial research for grassroots and NGO allies
  • Help develop and strengthen research skills of other RAN staff 

Serve as a spokesperson for RAN’s C&E program work: 

  • Lead the development of content for materials that communicate campaign work to media, policy makers, priority stakeholder groups, activists, and supporters
  • Represent RAN at meetings, conferences, in NGO coalitions, and in the media
  • Meet with senior staff from financial institutions, regulators, and Congressional staff to educate them on RAN’s research and policy analysis 

Support C&E program management: 

  • Supervise the Research Associate 
  • Manage research budget for the C&E program 
  • Support fundraising efforts 
  • Support other aspects of RAN’s work to maintain a healthy and collaborative workplace e.g., work planning, racial justice, grassroots training, event support, etc 


  • Strong research skills, including the ability to develop research methodologies, undertake analysis, and communicate findings about complex topics
  • At least 5 years of work experience needed in climate, energy, and/or financial analysis and writing research reports 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage complex projects with multiple partner organizations 
  • Knowledge and interest of issues surrounding climate change and racial justice desired 
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in English and the ability to write clearly and persuasively 
  • Ability to facilitate discussions and processes within the organization and among partners 
  • Highly organized, able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced campaigning environment 
  • Solid computer skills (Excel, Google Suite, etc.) 
  • Campaigning, advocacy and/or policy analysis experience preferred
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg or other financial or regulatory databases a plus 


This is a full-time position with an anticipated starting salary range of $75000-$85000, commensurate with experience. RAN staff are eligible to work remotely from anywhere they choose, or to work out of RAN’s office in San Francisco. 

Benefits include 100% RAN-paid health, dental and vision insurance for the employee and their partner/family, 4 weeks PTO (increases to 5 weeks after 2 years) as well as a paid winter break, and a retirement plan with a 3% employer match. Additionally, after each 5 years of service, staff are eligible for a 12 week fully-paid sabbatical.
