Concerned local residents turned out in force on Tuesday to demand that Cowlitz County, Washington officials revoke a shore permit for the proposed Longview coal export terminal.
If built, the facility will be the biggest coal export terminal on the North American West Coast. The company pursuing the development, Millennium Bulk Logistics, which is owned by Australian company Ambre Energy, plans to export the coal to Asian markets, mainly in China.
A mix of rain, sleet and snow did not deter a crowd of approximately 50 people, the majority from the Southwest Washington.
Willow Grove resident Les Anderson, who lives less than a mile west of the site of the proposed terminal, said he’s worried area residents will bear the brunt of coal dust that could blow into the air — despite Millennium’s pledge to takes steps to control it.
“We not only get the short end of the stick, but we get the stick stuck in our eye,” he said.
