100 Days to Power Past Coal

By scott parkin

Soon after the Nov. elections, the Alliance for Appalachia convened a meeting of over 25 local, regional and national groups working on coal issues. During the meeting a plan emerged to use the meme of the “First 100 Days” of the Obama administration to launch a campaign to power past coal.

Tomorrow launches the campaign with a national call-in day to the White House (202-456-1111) calling for a national moratorium on new coal plants. Another major action will happen on March 2, as a coalition of groups and individuals put their bodies on the line to shut down the Capital Coal Plant.

A movement of grassroots activists and community organizers has emerged to fight King Coal on the local, state, national and international levels, as well as holding various corporations and financiers accountable for their acts in the destroying the planet. The new administration is pretty far away from where we need them to be on the coal questions and while Bush is leaving the pressure needs to step up on Obama.

It’s time to Power Past Coal!
