Logging Company Decides to End Clear-Cut Logging on Grassy Narrows Traditional Territory in Ontario, Canada.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN) is thrilled that the largest paper company in the world, AbitibiBowater, has stopped logging on the Grassy Narrows million-acre Whiskey Jack Forest. The logging company was the last company to stop logging in the Grassy Narrows. Abitibi's decision was finally made after many years of lawsuits and peaceful protests by the people of Grassy Narrows including the longest standing logging blockade in North America!

RAN's Old Growth Campaign has been working with the people of Grassy Narrows since 2003, to pressure Weyerhaeuser Corp. and Boise Inc. to drop their logging contracts with AbitibiBowater for wood logged on Grassy Narrows.

RAN is thrilled for the Grassy Narrows community that their forests will no longer be clear-cut against their wishes.  Their forests are an important part of their livelihood and culture.   This victory is a major step forward for Indigenous peoples' rights. RAN wants all companies to respect the rights of Indigenous peoples to make decisions about what happens to their forests.

RAN wants Abitibi to understand the value of our forests.  Our remaining forests provide climate stability and clean water, among other very important things.

This victory demonstrates the amazing power we have when we all work together!   Thank you to all who sent letters, fundraised for the Protect-an-Acre program, or participated in this successful campaign in other ways.

We've set up a special fund through our Protect-an-Acre program that will be set aside for projects for the people of Grassy Narrows. RAN will continue to support the defense of their traditional lands and their freedom!
