Join the Out of Fashion Campaign
The fashion industry has a dirty secret – forests across the world are being destroyed, processed into pulp, and being used to create the fabrics we wear every day.
To make popular fabrics, including rayon and viscose, forests are cut down to make way for monocrop tree plantations. Trees from both the forest and the plantations are cut down and go through an incredibly toxic process to create what is known as dissolving pulp, a white fluffy material that gets spun into threads and woven into cloth.
This cloth is made into fabrics by some of the world’s most popular brands, including RAN’s Fashion Fifteen:
- Closet Classics: Guess, Abercrombie and Fitch, Forever 21, Velvet, & Limited Brands (Victoria’s Secret, The Limited, etc)
- Athletic Wear: Under Armour, Foot Locker, Gaiam, Beyond Yoga
- Luxury Brands: Prada Group (Prada, Miu Miu, etc), Vince, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and LVMH (Dior, Donna Karen, Fendi, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, etc)
The forests these fabrics come from – in Indonesia, Canada, Brazil and more – are home to critically endangered species, provide vital livelihoods for Indigenous and frontline communities, and are a key part of our defense against climate change.
Forest destruction for fabric has to stop. That’s why RAN has launched our Out of Fashion campaign, to demand the fashion industry commit to forest friendly fabric.
As this campaign ramps up, we’ll be demanding companies join the fight for the planet’s forests by committing to remove forest destruction and human rights abuses from their supply chains. We’ll need your help – educating your friends and family, taking action online or at in person events, and more.
Want to be part of the action? Say “I’m all in to protect the forests!” by adding your name. We’ll keep you up to date with all the opportunities to take action as this campaign gathers momentum.
