Development Coordinator for Major Gifts and Special Events




For 25 years, Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has campaigned for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that sustain life. Over the last decade, RAN’s Energy and Finance Program has succeeded in pushing leading banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi and Royal Bank of Canada to pass policies that curb investments in companies that contribute to deforestation and climate change.

The ideal Development Coordinator will bring extraordinary energy, a love of multi-tasking, no fear of learning new technology, multi-faceted skills in project management, event planning and execution to help RAN’s development team raise $4.5mil this coming year.  The right person will enjoy providing customer-service-style warmth and information directly to our development team and our “customers,” some of the world’s most dedicated philanthropists for the planet! The Development coordinator will join a fast-paced team that cares deeply about consistency of brand message, customized outreach, professionalism and creating special settings for intimate gatherings and big events.

Specific duties:

  • Organize intimate Major Donor and special fundraising events in the realm of house parties, cocktail parties, luncheons, brown bag lunches and other cultivation opportunities as needed.
  • Support the fundraising side of our signature event Revel, which may include communicating with Board members, managing an auction, in-kind and sponsorship mailings, and all fundraising-related promotions and tracking (ticket sales, attendance, sponsorship, donor relations).
  • Work with online team to coordinate the calendar and production of event-related eblasts, social media promotions and other special event website projects.
  • Proactively support the cultivation and stewardship efforts of key staff and Board members by assisting them in carrying out strategic moves management plans to meet monthly revenue targets and cultivate donors and prospects.
  • Provide fundraising related support to the Board of Directors. Activities include scheduling, preparing materials and taking minutes for the Board Development Committee meetings.
  • Facilitation of written materials and coordination of mailings including major donor appeals, major donor reports updates, cultivation and stewardship pieces, proposals and reports. This includes preparing initial drafts.
  • Responsible for managing Major Donor and Special Event data in Raiser’s Edge, including updating donor records (including paper files) to reflect research, cultivation and stewardship activities as well as retrieving custom reports and spreadsheets.
  • Managing major donor and special events revenue and expense forecasting. Process major donor related invoices.
  • Manage donor profiles for website.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings, half-yearly planning retreats and bi-weekly staff meetings.
  • Share office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and safe workplace.

Required Qualifications:

  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience in Special Events management/coordination.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects and timelines.
  • Willingness to work independently from beginning to end of project, as well as side-by-side with Development Director and/or Board members as needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as great care and judgment for tone.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Positive and professional attitude.
  • Experience with database management.
  • Enthusiasm for RAN’s mission and work is essential.

Fabulous Bonus Experience:

  • Advanced experience with Raiser’s Edge and ability to run effective queries.
  • Experience with Salsa and Drupal.
  • Desire to learn about all the different channels of fundraising.
  • Ability to “weather” the occasional “fire-drill”.
  • High energy, comfort with deadlines and good work-life balance.
  • Interest in anti-oppression and diversity work.
